Getting Unstuck #190 / 191: Changing the K12 System of Education

One District at a Time

Periodically on the show, we like to rerun what I’ll call evergreen episodes. These are episodes with an enduring message — they are thought-provoking over time. The interview I conducted with Peter McWain, Santa Fe Public Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction during the summer of 2018 is a good example.

In our original conversation

Peter and I wrestled with a couple of meaty questions:

·      What is the goal of U.S. education in an ever-changing world?

·      What do we want for our students when they walk across the stage to receive their high school diploma? And what kind of people do we want them to be?

In our update conversation

Now, no one hopes for a pandemic to bring about change, but in the case of COVID, SFPS saw some benefits along with the pain. When you click on the update audio button, you’ll want to listen for the following three points:

  1. Teachers and students demonstrated greater use of and facility with electronic platforms, which has helped everyone focus on priority standards.

  2. Taking a deeper dive into the priority standards encouraged some cross-over between disciplines so that students were not always learning in isolated silos.

  3. COVID spawned greater awareness that academics is dependent on first meeting a students' psychological needs.
